You've been wondering. Let's figure it out.
They're 5, 6, 7, 8, maybe 9. And you've been asking yourself: are they ready?
Ready to join a team. Ready to try a class. Ready to handle the pressure, the other kids, the structure. Ready to not fall apart if it doesn't go perfectly.
Or maybe the question underneath the question: am I going to push them into something too early and put them off sport for good?
That's a fair worry. And you're not the only parent thinking it.
This checklist gives you a straight answer — not a vague "every child is different" brush-off. A real, practical assessment you can do in 5 minutes.
18 questions across 3 areas that actually matter.
Physical Readiness
Can their body handle it? Not "are they athletic" — just the basic movement foundations. Can they catch? Can they run without tripping? Can they balance?
Emotional Readiness
Can they handle the environment? Following instructions from a new adult. Coping when things don't go their way. Being around kids they don't know.
Interest & Motivation
Do they actually want to? This is the one most parents skip — and it's the most important. You can't force interest. But you can spot it if you know what to look for.
At the end, you'll get:
- A clear result based on their total score
- What their score actually means (spoiler: there's no "fail")
- A specific recommendation for what to do next — based on where they landed
No scare tactics. No pressure.
This isn't designed to make you feel like they're behind. There's no "your kid should be doing X by now" guilt trip.
Every kid develops at a different pace. The checklist just helps you see where they are right now — so you can meet them there instead of guessing.
If they're ready, you'll know what kind of environment to look for. If they're not quite there yet, you'll know exactly what to work on at home — no coaching degree required.
This is for parents who:
- Have a kid between 5 and 9
- Are thinking about getting them into sport but aren't sure if it's the right time
- Don't want to push too hard or too early
- Didn't play sport themselves and feel unsure about navigating this
- Want a simple, honest answer — not a sales pitch
Why I made this.
I'm Coach James. I work with kids aged 5–14, helping them build ball skills, confidence, and a love for being active.
Every week, parents ask me: "Are they ready? Should I wait? Am I too early? Am I too late?"
This checklist is my honest answer to all of those questions — in a format you can use at home, on your own time, without needing to book a session or talk to anyone.
Five minutes. That's all it takes.
Five minutes to stop guessing and start knowing.
Wherever your kid lands on this checklist, you'll walk away with a clear picture and a next step. No pressure. No pitch. Just a starting point.
