Where the Love of Basketball Starts
Basketball for boys and girls aged 4-6. Sundays in Redfern. Fun first, always.
You want your kid to try sport. But at 4, 5 or 6 you are not sure they are ready. Will they listen? Will they keep up? Will they actually enjoy it or just cry on the sideline?
And you have probably heard the stories. A friend's kid who tried a class and hated it. Too chaotic, too overwhelming, a coach who could not keep the group engaged. At this age one bad experience is all it takes for a kid to decide sport is not for them.
That first experience matters. Rookies exists to make sure it is the right one.
What makes this different
Fun that teaches. Not babysitting basketball.
Every session is structured with purpose. Every game builds coordination, every drill builds confidence. It just looks like play.
Movement first, basketball second.
At 4-6 the goal is not crossovers and three-pointers. It is coordination, balance, spatial awareness and confidence in their own body. Basketball is the vehicle for all of it.
12 kids max. No exceptions.
We turn bookings away to keep the ratio tight. Your child will not get lost in a crowd of 30 kids with one overwhelmed coach.
What they get
- Fun that actually teaches
- Movement and coordination
- New friends and real connections

A typical session
Every hour is planned. Here is what to expect on the day.
Session starts on the dot. Warm-up games and movement play.
Movement circuit. Balance, agility and coordination disguised as games.
Skill station. Dribbling, passing and shooting.
Small-sided games. 3v3. Every kid touches the ball.
Cool-down. High-fives and "what did you learn today?"
What parents are saying
"James has been a wonderful basketball coach for my son and his team over the past few years. We have found James to be super encouraging and motivating and it's really helped develop my son's confidence. He has a great balance of teaching discipline whilst also keeping the game fun and engaging."
"James is an excellent coach. He is wonderful with kids and knows how to teach them and motivate them. Our son thrived under his guidance and really developed as a player. James is knowledgeable, experienced and kind. He is our son's favourite coach. I would recommend him to any parents or teams looking to further develop in basketball."
"We've had a fantastic experience with Inner Game Basketball and Coach James, the owner. Both of my sons have been training with him for a term now and will definitely continue. My older son also attended basketball camp during school holidays with James and absolutely loved it. It's been great to see how engaged and excited he is after each session. Coach James brings so much passion and energy to the game and it really shows in the way he runs his program. He creates a positive, encouraging environment while still focusing on skill development and improvement. Highly recommend Inner Game Basketball for any kids who want to build confidence, skills and a genuine love for the game."

Common questions
What parents usually ask before booking.
Not at all. Rookies is designed for complete beginners. We start with fundamental movement: running, jumping, balancing and catching. Basketball is the vehicle, not the prerequisite.
That is completely normal at this age. Sessions are structured with short, varied activities so kids stay engaged. We rotate every 10-15 minutes between games, movement circuits and skill stations. No standing in lines.
Comfortable clothes, runners or basketball shoes and a water bottle. Please bring a basketball. We have a few spares but not enough for everyone.
Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and watch from the sideline. NCIE has seating and a cafe if you prefer to grab a coffee.
No stress. Kids jump back in the following week. Each session is designed to work as a standalone class while building on skills over the term.
Sessions start at 2:00pm on the dot. If you arrive late your child can jump in as best they can, but we recommend arriving a few minutes early.
